Anthony Richardson

Anthony Richardson

23-Year-Old QuarterbackQB
Indianapolis Colts
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Health has been an issue for Richardson since the Colts drafted him fourth overall in 2023. He's missed 17 of 34 games, including four last season with hip, oblique, foot and back injuries (he was benched while healthy for two other games). Perhaps an even greater issue is Richardson's accuracy. Last year, it was off the chart -- the bottom of the chart. At 54.9 percent, his on-target rate was last in the league by more than 12 percentage points, and his 47.7 completion percentage was the worst since Tim Tebow's 46.5 in 2011. It doesn't help that Richardson is in love with the deep ball. He threw 20.1 percent of his attempts at least 20 yards downfield -- far and away tops in the league -- and had a league-high 12.2-yard average target depth. Yet, he converted that to a mere 6.8 YPA (25th). His massive rushing production -- 499 yards and six scores in 11 games -- was the one saving grace for his fantasy value, but he nonetheless failed to reach 14 fantasy points in seven games (four with single digits). This year, Richardson lost a summer job battle to free-agent signing Daniel Jones, who was named the Week 1 starter in mid-August. There's still hope Richardson's accuracy improves with better footwork and touch, as he turned 23 in May and has just 348 NFL pass attempts to his name. However, he'll start the season on the bench, and it doesn't seem like he has much of a future with Colts coach Shane Steichen even if the team ends up starting Richardson again at some point this season. Stuck behind Jones for Week 1
QBIndianapolis Colts
August 19, 2025
Richardson was informed Tuesday that he'll open the regular season backing up Daniel Jones, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The former Giant didn't necessarily outplay Richardson over two preseason games, but Jones did remain healthy throughout spring practice and training camp, while the fourth overall pick in the 2023 Draft has dealt with shoulder and finger injuries. There's still a good chance Richardson eventually makes starts this season, given Jones' shaky track record with the Giants in terms of both durability and performance.

2024
2023
Richardson’s rookie season earned an "incomplete" thanks to injuries, but his four-game debut showed glimpses of why the Colts made him the fourth overall pick in 2023. He suffered a bruised knee in Week 1, a concussion in Week 2 that also cost him the next game and a season-ending shoulder injury in Week 5 that required surgery. He showed off his big arm at times, though he didn’t throw deep a lot -- just 7.1 percent of his attempts went beyond 20 yards -- and his accuracy, while still a work in progress, wasn’t necessarily the Achilles' heel some expected. His running game is already top-tier, and he proved as elusive and powerful as advertised en route to 5.4 yards per rush (8th among QBs with at least 25 attempts) and four touchdowns. On 14 designed runs, he averaged a QB-high 7.0 yards per rush. The uber-athletic Richardson has an unprecedented size/speed combo -- 6-4, 244 with a 4.43 40 -- that should give him a solid fantasy floor while his passing develops. Coach Shane Steichen, who guided the development of Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia, will undoubtedly encourage Richardson to better protect himself, but the QB will still form a nasty two-headed rushing attack with RB Jonathan Taylor. WRs Michael Pittman, Josh Downs and Alec Pierce are reliable targets, and the team drafted 6-2 Adonai Mitchell, who has 4.34 speed, to give Richardson the deep threat he did not have last season. Better health might be all that's needed for Richardson to quickly jump into the top 5 of fantasy quarterbacks.
The fourth overall pick in this year’s draft, Richardson will compete for the starting job with free-agent acquisition Gardner Minshew. Richardson, who only turned 21 in late May, might need development time, but the Colts will want to see their QB of the future in action at some point this year. At 6-4, 244, Richardson is huge for a quarterback, which makes his 4.43 speed mind-blowing -- in fact, it's the fastest combine 40 time by a player at his height and weight on record (since 2000). That elite athleticism allows him to make plays on the move, and he’s elusive in the open field. Richardson has a big arm to attack downfield, but the knock on him is his accuracy -- he completed only 53.8 percent of passes last season at Florida. According to scouts, the inaccuracy stems from poor footwork and a lack of touch on short passes. New head coach Shane Steichen, who oversaw Jalen Hurts’ impressive improvement in accuracy as Philadelphia’s offensive coordinator the last two years, should help with that. And even if Richardson struggles, his rushing ability should give him fantasy value while he refines his passing skills. The Colts return wide receivers Michael Pittman and Alec Pierce, giving Richardson two solid targets, with third-round pick Josh Downs potentially the slot man. And with Jonathan Taylor in the backfield, Richardson gives the Colts a lethal one-two rushing punch.

Set to play after Jones vs. Packers
QBIndianapolis Colts
August 10, 2025
Richardson's scheduled to be the second quarterback into Saturday's preseason game against the Packers after Daniel Jones gets the start, per head coach Shane Steichen, Joel A. Erickson of the Indianapolis Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Richardson started the Colts' preseason opener against the Ravens but exited on the second drive after dislocating his right pinkie finger. Luckily for Richardson, the injury won't sideline him for the team's second preseason game, but he'll have to wait his turn until after Jones plays a couple series with the Colts opting to switch up the order of their quarterbacks in their ongoing competition for the regular-season starting job.
