Released with injury settlement

Whitehurst (knee) was released by the Browns with an injury settlement Tuesday.
Whitehurst replaced an injured Cody Kessler (ribs) in Week 5 and held his own, but he suffered an injury of his own in the process. The extent of Whitehurst's setback is not certain, but it apparently would have cost him some time, so the Browns decided to remove him from the roster and replace him with a healthy quarterback in Kevin Hogan. Whitehurst could hook on with a new team once he is back at 100 percent.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
Whitehurst started five games for the Titans last season, but he enters 2015 stuck at third on the depth chart behind Zach Mettenberger and second overall pick Marcus Mariota. Whitehurst won't work his way into the starter's discussion unless Mariota struggles mightily out of the gate.
Whitehurst, who signed a two-year, $8 million contract with the Titans in March of 2014, will serve as Jake Locker's top backup, while Tyler Wilson and Zach Mettenburger vie for the team's No. 3 QB slot.
Whitehurst will serve as the primary backup to Philip Rivers again this season. Whitehurst has never started a game for the Chargers but is thought of as an adequate fill-in if ever needed.
Whitehurst returns to San Diego to serve as the primary backup to Philip Rivers in 2012 after a two-year absence from the team.
It was generally thought that if Seattle brought in some halfway decent quarterback candidates, Whitehurst would head to the bench. The team brought in former Vikings quarterback Tavaris Jackson, which tentatively sends Whitehurst to the second level of the depth chart. The former Clemson quarterback is a project who never developed, and he’s only ranked this high because he doesn't have a seasoned veteran on the roster above him.
The Seahawks are clearly in total rebuilding mode in Pete Carroll’s first year, and the Seahawks love Charlie Whitehurst. What Whitehurst has done in practice and what he does in August will not matter one bit until he shows he can do it on Sundays in the fall.
Whitehurst will serve as the third quarterback in San Diego in 2009. He has not taken a single snap over the last two regular seasons.
Whitehurst will open the season as the number three quarterback behind Philip Rivers and Billy Volek.
Whitehurst enters the 2007 season as the third quarterback behind starter Philip Rivers and primary backup Billy Volek.
Charlie leaves Clemson as the third all-time leading passer in ACC history. He posted the nation's fifth highest completion percentage as a senior in 2005. With Philip Rivers firmly entrenched as the starter, Whitehurst will be competing with veteran A.J. Feeley for the all-important backup quarterback role.
