Tamme announced Thursday that he would retire from professional football, D. Orlando Ledbetter of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
ANALYSIS
The 32-year-old Tamme will wrap up a nine-year career that included stops in Indianapolis, Denver and Atlanta. He enjoyed his most productive run with the Colts, peaking with 67 receptions for 631 yards and four touchdowns in 2010. He appeared in eight games for the Falcons in 2016 before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury that may have influenced his decision to step away from the game.

Tamme had a three-year high in targets in his first season with the Falcons last year, which helped him post a six-year high in yards. That is good news, but it did not amount to much in terms of fantasy production. Then again, it is to be expected in an offense with a 200-target wide receiver in Julio Jones and a near 100-target running back in Devonta Freeman. Those two combined for 48.6 percent of Atlanta's targets last season. And that is likely to be the case again this season – if it does not get worse. Free-agent wide receiver addition Mohamed Sanu will at least get the 70 targets wide receiver Roddy White, who was released in March, leaves behind, if not more. The 6-3, 230-pound Tamme has never done much damage in the red zone, either. Last year he scored once in that area of the field - his lone touchdown of the season - on five targets. Tamme has good hands, ranking fifth in catch rate last season among tight ends at 72.8 percent, and while he has no doubt lost a step since running a 4.58 40-yard dash at the 2008 Combine, he is still quick enough at 31 years old to get down the seam for quarterback Matt Ryan. But until something changes in the target distribution for the Atlanta offense, Tamme's upside looks rather limited.
Tamme has been fortunate to catch balls from Peyton Manning for the majority of his career, but he won’t have that luxury in 2015. The Falcons signed the veteran tight end in free agency this offseason as they still attempt to fill the void left by Tony Gonzalez’s retirement following the 2013 season. The team hoped Levine Toilolo would take that role, but he proved rather ineffective in a full-time role last season. Enter Tamme, who has had two 50-plus receiving seasons in his seven-year career. If he can beat out Toilolo, Tamme could be in line for one of the more productive seasons of his career. However, he hasn’t recorded more than four touchdowns in a season despite teaming with Manning, so temper expectations.
When appearing in featured roles, Tamme has proven capable of posting very serviceable fantasy numbers, catching 67 and 52 passes from Peyton Manning in 2010 and 2012, respectively, in Indianapolis and Denver. When relegated to backup duty, as was the case last year with the emergence of Julius Thomas, Tamme has put up less than inspiring production, snagging a mere 20 passes on 25 targets for 184 yards in 2013. Under contract for another season with the Broncos, the 29-year-old Tamme's contributions will be directly tied to the health of Thomas.
Concern entering last season that Tamme would split targets with fellow tight end Joel Dreessen proved well-founded, as Peyton Manning used both often but in different ways. Unfortunately for Tamme, while he dominated the targets, 85 to 58, he missed out in the red zone, seeing only six targets to Dreessen's 14. That left Tamme with only two touchdowns last season. Tamme isn't the fastest runner but has always been known for his hands and was a good weapon for Manning, who could hit him in a small window as Tamme came out of his break. But Tamme will again share targets with Dreessen, and the addition of Wes Welker in the slot is likely to cut further into Tamme's opportunities.
The Broncos signed Tamme in March, re-uniting him with Peyton Manning. Tamme made a splash in 2010 for the Colts after starter Dallas Clark went down with a season-ending injury. Mostly to Manning’s credit, Tamme became the fantasy pickup of the season among tight ends, totaling 631 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Not the fastest tight end, Tamme does have good hands, which led to a 72-percent catch rate that season. For an idea of Tamme’s potential, his 2010 numbers, prorated over 16 games, would equal 1,009 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. But don’t expect such lofty numbers even if Tamme wins the starting job. First, Joel Dreesen, who scored 10 touchdowns over the last two seasons with Houston, also signed with the Broncos, creating the prospect of a timeshare. And, of course, Manning has much to prove health-wise. Given his history with Manning, Tamme should have the upper hand at the position heading into camp, but that could change before Week 1.
Tamme become one of the best fantasy pickups of last season after Dallas Clark sustained a season-ending wrist injury in Week 6. Tamme utilized his speed on quick routes to catch the ball on the run. As a result, he recorded 319 YAC, a lofty number considering he started only 11 games. Tamme finished with 631 receiving yards and four touchdowns, but he'll go back to reserve duty this season with the return of Clark, who had offseason wrist surgery. Tamme might have earned a bigger role in the offense for this season, but his ceiling is limited unless Clark goes down again.
Had three catches last year and will back up at H-back, tight end and special teams.
Tamme is the backup halfback for the Colts behind Gijon Robinson. It is unlikely that Tamme will get playing time in 2009, as the Colts are impressed with the progress that Robinson has made, starting almost every game for the Colts in 2008. Still, Tamme has perhaps the best receiving ability after Dallas Clark among the tight ends, so there's upside here if he finds playing time.
Tamme is a skilled pass catcher who could see a few snaps in 2008, though not near enough to give him any fantasy value. His only potential would be tied to a Dallas Clark injury.
