Schilens was released by the Lions on Friday, NFL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Schilens is a bit of a surprise release, as he was battling for the third wide receiver spot with the Lions. He has played 15 games in each of the last two NFL seasons, so he should see some interest on the market as a depth receiver for a thin team.

After injury-marred seasons in 2009 and 2010, Schilens played 15 games last year but dealt with nagging foot and groin issues and was largely buried on the Oakland depth chart. This year, he projects as a potential starter opposite Santonio Holmes on the Jets, a significant upgrade in opportunity despite the team’s below-average passing environment. At 6-4, 225, and with good long speed, Schilens has the skills to make plays down the field and is well suited to red-zone work, certainly in comparison to the diminutive Holmes. But given Schilens track record of poor health and his lack of credentials as an established receiver, his situation was best summed up by Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum: “He could catch a 100 balls ... or he could be a special teamer.” The former scenario – well, more likely 70 balls – makes Schilens worth a gamble in the later rounds.
Schilens' 2010 was mostly lost to a knee injury, but he finished the year healthy and could have a significant role in the Oakland passing game this season. At 6-4, 225, and with good straight-ahead speed, he's able to make plays down the field and also in the red zone. The Raiders have plenty of speed players like Jacoby Ford and Darrius Heyward-Bey, but the former is small, and the latter is still raw. Louis Murphy is also in the mix, but the No. 1 job is up for grabs.
While Jason Campbell is hardly a marquee quarterback, at least the Raiders receivers have a chance this year. Schilens missed the first half of 2009 with a foot injury, but returned as a starter and managed 12.6 yards per catch and 7.2 yards per target in one of the league’s worst passing environments. At 6-4, 225, Schilens has excellent size and good straight ahead speed. He’ll enter 2010 as one of the team’s starting wideouts, though no receiver on the team has any kind of established role. Schilens had offseason surgery on his foot, but is expected to be 100 percent for the start of training camp.
Schilens is currently listed as the Raiders' starting wide receiver opposite Javon Walker. However, he will be challenged for playing time by no less than four other receivers during training camp. Schilens' fantasy value isn't very high to begin with, so he'll need to really impress the coaches and maintain the starting role if he hopes to make much of an impact.
Schilens isn't likely to make the final roster but he is a good candidate for the Raiders' practice squad.
