Webb officially announced his retirement Saturday, Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic reports.

The veteran had a bit of a roller-coaster offseason as he was initially a cap casualty as the Ravens needed to clear cap room to add priority free agents. However, the club eventually circled back and brought Webb back on a more cap-friendly three-year deal. Webb, 31, has lost a step in recent years after multiple knee injuries earlier in his career, but he made a rather smooth transition to safety last season. With Eric Weddle and the newly acquired Tony Jefferson comprising the Ravens' starting safety tandem, Webb profiles as a backup safety with an unclear path to regular playing time barring an injury.

Though he played cornerback for the first seven years of his career, Baltimore is using Webb as a safety entering his eighth campaign. He’ll start next to Eric Weddle as the team’s starting safety duo. The position change could allow Webb to increase his tackles now that he’ll be on the inside of the field as opposed to the outside. He played 83.6 percent of the Ravens’ defensive snaps in 2015 and will likely be a pivotal member of the secondary once again.

Webb has struggled to stay on the field throughout his career, but he's typically been excellent when able to play. That changed in 2014, as he was frequently picked on while recovering from lingering back and hip injuries. Webb did improve as the season went on, and he says he's back at full health for 2015. He'll start at left cornerback and may sometimes handle the slot in three or four-wide sets.

Webb returned from a torn ACL to put together a solid, healthy season, but he wasn't quite the dominant corner that we saw in 2012 and early in 2013. He did, however, record career-high marks in tackles (74) and pass defenses (22), as opposing quarterbacks were more willing to throw in his direction than they had been in past years. Still only 28 years old, Webb could regain his top form, which probably wouldn't be of any use to IDP owners.

Webb only played in sx games last season for the Ravens, and will look to bounce back from an ACL injury that ended his 2012 season. Webb and the Ravens' defense lost many key pieces, but added other high profile free agents this offseason as replacements. Webb is a surprisingly good run-stopper for his size, so he could be a solid IDP option in leagues that differentiate between safeties and cornerbacks.

Webb picked off five passes during the 2011 season, and then grabbed three more in two playoff games. He also went the entire season without giving up a touchdown pass. This year you can expect quarterbacks to target the other members of Baltimore's secondary, although Webb is a good tackler despite his stature, so he could still rack up some tackles.

Webb should see the field in nickel and dime packages, and if injuries are a concern again he will be one of the first in line to start. He should factor heavily into the return game as well.

Webb may not even be ready to play to start the season after an ACL tear in December landed him on Injured Reserve. He'll need time to get up to full speed before he can be counted on as a nickel back and return man again.

Webb likely won't see much of the field considering his rookie status and the Ravens' depth in the secondary. He has speed to burn, however, and is a potential kick return candidate.
