Cut by the Bears during training camp after failing to win the No. 3 running back job.
Brinkley will be part of a suddenly crowded field of running backs looking to back up Ryan Mathews in San Diego. Ronnie Brown and Jackie Battle both figure to be ahead of Brinkley on the depth chart, but Brinkley at least has some experience with the system and he was fairly effective when Mathews was banged up last season.
The Chargers hope Brinkley will not carry the ball much during the regular season as he will be fourth on the depth chart behind Ryan Mathews, Mike Tolbert, and rookie Jordan Todman. Of course, injuries are a fact of life at the running back position, so he will work hard in the preseason to make sure he's ready if he gets the call.
Brinkley spent the 2009 season on the Reserve-Non Football Injury list, but he will come to camp in 2010 battling for a spot behind Ryan Mathews and Darren Sproles in the backfield.
