ANALYSIS
Paul was released by the 49ers on Friday and said even though he feels he can compete for a roster spot this season, he doesn't think his body can handle it. The 29-year-old was known for his days with the Redskins, when he racked up 68 catches for 856 yards and two touchdowns in six seasons.

Paul spent the first six seasons of his career with the Redskins before signing with the Jaguars as a free agent in March. The 2011 fifth-rounder posted 39 receptions for 507 yards and a touchdown in 2014, but otherwise played a minimal role in the passing game with Washington. Jacksonville's release of veteran Marcedes Lewis opens up the starting role at tight end for fellow free agent acquisition Austin Seferian-Jenkins, leaving Paul to likely serve as the team's No. 2 tight end. At 6-1, 242 pounds, Paul doesn't have the frame of a red-zone target and has only two touchdown catches in his career. He seems unlikely to play a significant role in the passing game, assuming he makes the 53-man roster over younger options like Ben Koyack and James O'Shaughnessy.
Paul is gearing up for his sixth season in the nation’s capital and is coming off a 2016 campaign ravaged by injury - which limited him to just eight games. However, the veteran is 100 percent healthy for training camp and could see an increased role given Jordan Reed’s injury history. Should Reed miss time again in 2017 (he has yet to complete a 16-game season) Paul will likely serve as the No. 2 option behind Vernon Davis.
Paul entered last season in the best shape of his life. He had fully transitioned from wide receiver to tight end and was looking toward a breakout season. However, he suffered a severely dislocated ankle in the preseason and missed the whole year. He is making progress in his recovery, but it's clearly unlikely he will start this year in the same condition he was in last season. On top of all this, Jordan Reed had a breakout season in 2015 and is now the Redskins' unquestioned starter at tight end. The team also signed veteran Vernon Davis this offseason, further crowding the position, but Paul's value on special teams should help him see the field regardless of his involvement level on offense.
Paul registered a career year on offense in 2014 when Jordan Reed struggled to stay healthy, collecting 39 receptions for 507 yards and a touchdown. He has good hands and speed for a tight end, when healthy, but struggles to block. A serious ankle injury put his 2015 season to an abrupt halt in August.
Backup tight end and special teams contributor.
Paul has struggled to make an impact after moving to tight end. He had an opportunity after Fred Davis missed the second half of the season but only caught eight passes. Instead the light catching Logan Paulsen saw most of the reps. Paul will likely have to prove himself once again in camp in order to make the team.
Paul had a quiet rookie season in 2011. He spent most of his time on special teams before missing several games with turf toe. The team likes his size and speed but do not have room for him at wide receiver. He has been asked to bulk up and learn to play tight end. He will compete for a spot behind Fred Davis and Chris Cooley. Paul will be a bit undersized for the position but has good speed and could cause some match-up problems.
