Moore, a former second-round draft pick, has lost his starting job twice in his five-year career. Now, after a horrific season for the Texans in which he recorded just 16 tackles, 2 passes defensed and one interception before getting benched after seven games, Moore figures to slide in as the starting free safety for the Browns. However, Jordan Poyer, listed second on the depth chart, waits in the wings, and could pounce if Moore slips up yet again.
Moore looks to be the immediate beneficiary of the Texans releasing D.J. Swearinger, who started 13 games and was fourth on the team in tackles last season. With Swearinger gone, Moore figures to move right into Houston’s starting free safety spot, after posting four picks and two forced fumbles last season with the Broncos.
Moore suffered from a bout of acute compartment syndrome in his left leg last November, which ended his season after having to have emergency surgery. He has fully recovered and is in line to start again at free safety, with T.J. Ward playing alongside him. Ward is the high-volume tackler of the two, but Moore could be in line for a jump this season as one of the better free safeties in the league.
Moore finished third on the Broncos in tackles in 2012 and will start at free safety alongside Champ Bailey, Dominque Rodgers-Cromartie and Mike Adams, collectively a strong secondary presence.
Will back up Mike Adams at free safety.
The 2011 second round draft pick will immediately be thrown into the starting lineup as the free safety opposite long-time veteran Brian Dawkins.
