The Jaguars waived Gilchrist on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Gilchrist signed with Jacksonville on Nov. 26, and he's played in a rotational safety role, recording two solo tackles over three games. The Jags promoted safety Doug Middleton from the practice squad to take Gilchrist's place. If Gilchrist clears waivers, he'll be free to sign with another team.

In 2015, the Jets essentially contracted Gilchrist to provide competency, for lack of an appropriately-harsher word, at covering tight ends; the team surrendered an NFL-most 14 scores to the position in 2014. However, with Gilchrist deployed in the secondary, the Jets allowed just two total touchdowns to tight ends in 2015, good for second-fewest in the league. With the presence of tight ends such as Rob Gronkowski, Jordan Cameron and Charles Clay in the division, that is a remarkable turnaround. Fantasy-wise, however, Gilchrist remains a middling option at DB, but another 82 tackle, seven PD and three interception stat-line from last season is undoubtedly within reach.
Following a 2014 campaign with the Chargers in which he racked up 76 tackles, one sack, five passes defensed, one pick, and two forced fumbles in 16 games, Gilchrist is slated to start at safety next to Calvin Pryor in 2015. The addition of Gilchrist is a piece of the improvement to the Jets' secondary along with fellow offseason signees Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie, and Buster Skrine.
Gilchrist got the chance to start at strong safety in 2013, and he responded with a great season, playing in all 16 games and logging 77 total tackles and two interceptions. The Bolts appear very happy with Gilchrist as they waived the once very highly touted Brandon Taylor this offseason.
Gilchrist has been used only as a corner thus far in his career, but he has been working exclusively at strong safety during camp and could very well open the season as the starter opposite Eric Weddle if Brandon Taylor is not fully recovered from ACL surgery.
It looks like Gilchrist, who had two interceptions in 2011, will be the third corner in San Diego this season.
Gilchrist has a fantastic opportunity to make a big impact in his first season. He is slotted to serve as the primary nickel back and has a chance to become the primary kick and punt returner with the departure of Darren Sproles. At Clemson, Gilchrist was a dangerous return man, and he has said that he welcomes the chance to take on that role in San Diego.
