Coming into last season, Skrine averaged 61.3 tackles per year from 2012-18, so posting just 48 stops without an interception in 16 games made for his worst fantasy output since he was a rookie in 2011. Going into the fall, his role should be similar to last year's, as he'll likely serve as the primary slot corner, and his IDP production mostly has to do with opportunity more than talent. Expecting a slight bounce back in the tackle department is reasonable, but he's more of a high-floor than a high-ceiling fantasy option.
There's no doubt that Skrine isn't a great cover corner, but for fantasy, that means he'll get picked on by opposing quarterbacks. Based on the amount of passes he defends, he's exceeded 55 tackles in every season he's played at least 15 games. However, aside from tackles, he offers very little else, as he's intercepted just 3.5 passes in eight seasons.
Skrine struggled to make much of an impact during his first season with the Jets, but he comes back with a starting job thanks to the team investing two early round draft picks on safeties. The Jets' defense figures to be on the field quite a bit this year if the offense struggles as expected, though Skrine isn't enough of a defensive stat accumulator to be a realistic IDP option in most leagues.
In his first season with the Jets in 2015, Skrine had bit of a down season, totaling just one interception, seven passes defensed, and 56 tackles, his worst numbers since his rookie year. The drop could possibly be chalked up to a reduced role, as he was a nickel corner rather than a the starter he’d been with the Browns. With Antonio Cromartie now gone from the Jets, Skrine will start opposite Darrelle Revis and could have a bounce back year.
Skrine, who signed with the Jets this offseason, racked up 67 tackles, 18 passes defensed, and four interceptions in 16 games as a starter with the Browns in 2014. The 26-year-old is slated to be the team's No. 3 corner behind fellow offseason additions Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie.
Skrine will have to hold off rookie Justin Gilbert if he's going to keep his job as the starting cornerback alongside Joe Haden in 2014. If he manages to hang on to his starting job, there's potentially some IDP value to find here, as Skrine racked up 65 combined tackles, a sack and an interception in his 2013 campaign.
Skrine is expected provide the Browns with depth in the secondary behind starters CBs Joe Haden and Leon McFadden.
As a fifth-round selection in 2011, Skrine had a solid rookie campaign. He finished with 18 tackles, two passes defensed, one interception, and also returned some kickoffs. The Browns like his abilities, but he's not likely to be more than a special teams contributor and backup corner in 2012.
