Grimes was waived by the Jaguars on Saturday, Mike Kaye of WTLV reports.
ANALYSIS
Grimes was essentially brought in as a camp body and never seemed to have a legitimate chance of making the roster. He's an unlikely candidate for the practice squad, so expect him to hit the free-agent market if he clears waivers.

Grimes has found himself a home with the Texans, having signed a one-year deal in the offseason, making 2016 his fifth year with the organization. He rushed for a career-high 282 yards and caught 26 of 31 targets in 14 games. His system knowledge should put him ahead of Akeem Hunt on the preseason depth chart, but the addition of Lamar Miller to be Houston's feature back puts Grimes no better than third on the depth chart, right behind Alfred Blue. And if 2016 fourth-round pick Tyler Ervin develops, Grimes could be last on the depth chart or worse.
Grimes entered training camp last summer with a shot to earn the backup job to Arian Foster, but lost out to Alfred Blue and spent the season as the third running back. He got some fill-in work in games when Arian Foster wasn’t available, but opportunities were few. Additionally, with the Texans adding free agent Chris Polk (Eagles) and drafting LSU’s Kenny Hilliard in the seventh round this offseason, Grimes faces competition to hold onto his job this term.
Grimes showed some promise in a Week 17 start against Tennessee - 16 carries for 50 yards and a touchdown to go along with six catches for 76 yards. Following the August release of Andre Brown, Grimes is in line to compete for slotting behind top back, Arian Foster, a backup assignment of some import, given Foster's recent injury history.
Released by the Jaguars in August of 2013.
Grimes faces long odds to make Houston's roster as a running back. He was an all-purpose back at William & Mary, including a role in the kick return game. The Texans have openings in both the punt and kick return spots, so if Grimes is to crack the opening day roster, it will be as a special-teamer.
