The Raiders kept seven linebackers on the roster, so there wasn't much room for Archuleta. The former safety will have a chance to catch on somewhere else before the season starts.

Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams' defenses in Washington seem to be where good IDPs go to die. Lavar Arrington didn’t have the discipline to start for Williams in 2005, though his diminished skills also prevented him from accomplishing much the next year in New York. Archuleta, though, still has it. In his case, while he ceased to be an IDP star, his last few years in St. Louis were absolutely fantasy worthy. He moved to Washington in 2006 and played just seven games before Williams took away his starting job. Williams plain refused to play him on defense, relegating him to special teams. Yet, in those seven games as the starter, Archuleta averaged 7.4 fantasy points per game. We might just be chasing that 2002 season, when he had 102 solo tackles, but at least this year there’s a reason. By moving to Chicago, Archuleta is reunited with Lovie Smith, the defensive coordinator who made him a star in St. Louis. Archuleta fits the system because of his speed, aggressiveness and intimidating hitting. This should be a match made in IDP heaven.

Time was, Archuleta didn’t need Mulligans. With 102 solo tackles in 2002, he appeared a boy king. While he’s been useful in the fantasy world since, he hasn’t delivered on the promise. He played 16 games in 2004 but two degenerative disks ruined his second half after a very promising first 10 games. Come 2005, he suffered another concussion, which was a problem for him in his first few years in the league. It’s no wonder he didn’t have any good games once he returned. Here’s a guy who needs a new start, and he got one by signing with Washington, where he should thrive under defensive coordinator Gregg Williams’ tutelage. Archuleta is a bruising hitter with little to offer in coverage, though he has dropped a pick in here and there in his career. His specialty is the pass rush, where he’s averaged three sacks per year. Williams should work wonders for Archuleta’s penchant for getting out of position. Here’s hoping a human pinball with back and concussion problems can stay on the field.

At strong safety, Archuleta (6-0, 223) plays like an undersized linebacker, and the team typically lines him up as close to the line of scrimmage as possible. Adequate in coverage, lacking the recognition or fluidness necessary for that sort of role, he excels at physical plays against the run and in pursuit. A 102-solo-tackle season in 2002 had many thinking he’d be the second coming of Rodney Harrison, but Archuleta lacks durability. He was on pace for 99 solos last year through 10 games but two degenerative discs in his back slowed him considerably in the second half. Had St. Louis had the depth, he might have sat out up to a month. He opted for rehab instead of surgery this offseason. Archuleta’s picked up at least two sacks every year, but don’t expect much in picks or passes defended. If healthy, he can be a top five defensive back, but there’s the rub: if healthy.

You might as well list Archuleta as a linebacker. He plays further up than most strong safeties to support the run, and with 3, 2.5 and 5 sacks in his three years in the league, always gets more sacks than picks (two total for his career). Averaging more than five solo tackles per game, he logs 91 solo stops per 16 games and scores consistently from week to week. At 6-0 and 223 lbs., he's small for playing like a linebacker, which may be behind his penchant for missing a game or two each year.

Archuletta, who plays more like a linebacker from the safety spot, led all defensive backs with 94 solo tackles to go along with 2.5 sacks, five passes defensed and one interception. Expect him to take another step up in his third season in the league.
