Knee - ACL
August 29, 2022
The Vikings placed Johnson (knee) on injured reserve Monday, Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson tore the ACL in his left knee during Saturday's preseason finale against Denver, and barring an injury settlement, will now miss the entire 2022 campaign. The 2019 seventh-round pick suffered the same injury last year, only in the other knee.

Johnson tore his ACL in training camp last July and sat out the entire 2021 season. He worked as the Vikings' third wide receiver at times in 2020 before sliding down the depth chart late in that campaign. Johnson will be in the mix for the No. 4 role this summer once he's back to full strength.
After catching 31 passes as a rookie seventh-rounder in 2019, Johson saw his usage scaled back last year. In 16 games the Colorado State product hauled in 14 of 19 targets for 189 yards. Unfortunately his 2021 season was derailed by an ACL tear that he suffered in late July.
Johnson joined the Vikings as a seventh-round pick last year and ended up second among the team's wide receivers with 547 offensive snaps, trailing only the since-traded Stefon Diggs. Adam Thielen's hamstring injury was a major contributor to that, but Chad Beebe's injuries and Laquon Treadwell's general struggles also played a part. Despite the field time, Johnson didn't provide much production with 31 catches for 294 yards and three touchdowns. First-round pick Justin Jefferson figures to start and take the lion's share of Diggs' opportunities, while free-agent signing Tajae Sharpe likely is No. 3 on the depth chart. Johnson and Beebe should also compete for that role, but it's unlikely to carry much volume given Minnesota's heavy utilization of two-tight end sets.
One of two wide receivers selected by the Vikings in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Johnson will compete with incumbents Chad Beebe and Laquon Treadwell as well as fellow rookie Dillon Mitchell for the No. 3 position behind Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs. Johnson was hardly a standout during his four-year collegiate career at Colorado State, but he did accumulate 54 receptions, 796 yards and four touchdowns in his final season with the Rams and seems to possess the necessary route-running skills to be an effective depth option at the NFL level.

Johnson visited with the Patriots on Thursday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson missed the entire 2022 season after tearing his ACL in the preseason, but the fact that the free agent wide receiver's visiting with potential suitors suggests that Johnson has made substantial progress in his recovery. He had 483 yards split between the 2019 and 2020 seasons with the Vikings prior to suffering a pair of torn ACLs.
