ANALYSIS
Ball hasn't practiced or played since early August, but evidently his progress since suffering his concussion has been less than ideal, prompting the IR decision here.

Ball will continue to get limited snaps as a backup defensive end.

Ball got plenty of playing time in 2008 when Kyle Vanden Bosch went down for the season and played very well. He will return in 2009 as the backup defensive end, but will likely see significant minutes. He is athletic, can make plays and may get plenty of tackles and a few sacks in 2009.

Depth Guy.

Ball had his rookie season cut to only six games after he had surgery on an injured toe last year. When he was drafted, San Diego was hoping he could develop into a pass rush specialist, and they are still hoping. He is not projected to be a starter in 2005.

The Chargers need help at defensive end, and Ball could contribute early on during his rookie season. In 2003 at UCLA he averaged 1.27 sacks per game, and he holds the all-time school sack record with 30.5 for his career.
