Baker appeared in three games for the Saints, logging just one carry, before missing last week's tilt against the Bengals with a concussion. It could be a sign that the Saints expect at least one of Khiry Robinson (arm) or Pierre Thomas (rib/shoulder) back from injury this week, deeming Baker expendable.

Baker, who signed a reserve/futures contract with the Saints in January 2015, spent part of 2014 on the Saints’ practice squad but was promoted to the team’s active roster in October following a rash of backfield injuries. He appeared in only three games – logging just a single carry – before being cut in November. Prior to last season’s brief stint in New Orleans, Baker managed 43 carries for 171 yards (4.0 YPC) and two touchdowns in his debut year with Cleveland in 2013. Following the departures of Pierre Thomas and Travaris Cadet, Baker has a chance to compete for a roster spot this offseason, with his likeliest competition coming from Tim Hightower and rookie Marcus Murphy. Even if he makes the Saints’ regular-season roster, his path to touches remains impeded by the trio of Mark Ingram, CJ Spiller, and Khiry Robinson.

The former Spartan managed 43 carries for 171 yards and two touchdowns for a decent 4.0 YPC in his debut year in Cleveland in 2013. With the Browns adding Ben Tate and Terrence West to their running back corps in the offseason, Baker ultimately became expendable and was cut in August.

With Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown both locked into structured complimentary roles in the San Diego backfield, Baker would probably only see significant playing time if Ryan Mathews missed extended time due to injury again in 2013.

Baker is probably a long shot to make the final roster since Ronnie Brown was signed to serve as the primary backup to Ryan Mathews. Baker, however, was a productive runner at Michigan State, piling up 2,293-yards and 19 touchdowns over three years.
