Eric Parker

Parker has long been considered one of the toughest and most dependable receivers on the team. His best season came back in 2005, despite the fact that he registered a modest 57 receptions for 725 yards and only three touchdowns. In 2006, his numbers began to decline as he managed only 48 receptions for 659 yards and did not score any touchdowns. The downward trend figures to continue with the development of Vincent Jackson and the drafting of rookie Craig Davis. Parker will still be a valuable contributor, but his best statistical days are probably behind him.

Parker has a well-earned reputation as a tough player given his relatively small stature, and he opens the season as the number two wide receiver in San Diego. He set career highs with 57 receptions for 725 yards in 2005, and can probably be counted on for about the same with three or four touchdowns this season. He has had plenty of good games over the years, but he has never really been a player that can be counted on week in and week out. If fellow starter, Keenan McCardell starts to show his age, Parker may be able to pick up the slack, but this offense will always center around LaDainian Tomlinson and Antonio Gates.

Parker was the Chargers' leading wide receiver by default in 2004 because Reche Caldwell's season was cut in half due to injury and Keenan McCardell was only acquired in time to play seven regular season games. Still, Parker was a consistent performer and a favorite of Drew Brees all year long. He has a smallish frame, but his teammates routinely refer to him as one of the toughest players on the team. He has demonstrated big play ability in the past and figures to have another solid season, but his upside is severely limited by the fact that he will have stiff competition for balls this year with the aforementioned Caldwell and McCardell in the mix for a full season. Also, don't forget about tight end Antonio Gates (a record-setter in 2004) or running back LaDainian Tomlinson (one of the best pass catching backs in the league). Add it all up, and it would be tough for Parker to have a great fantasy year without an injury or two to some of the other pass catching options on this team.

Parker has shown glimpses of his potential during his two-year career with San Diego. In 2003 he caught only 18 balls, but three of those went for touchdowns. The competition will be fierce among the Chargers' receivers this year.
