Nickel cornerback. His play has regressed over the last few years and he cannot cover bigger receivers.
Starting cornerback. He always seems to suffer through injuries because of his small size but willingness to throw his body around. Has only two interceptions over the last two seasons.
Returns to the Redskins after two poor season with the Vikings. The Skins are hoping a return to home will provide the spark Smoot needs to return to form. He will compete with Shawn Springs and Carlos Rogers for the starting cornerback positions. Expect him to win out and put together a solid season in a system he is familiar with.
Last season, Smoot underperformed (including allowing 201 yards to Steve Smith), was embarrassed by his role in the “love boat” incident and missed four games with a shoulder injury. If he can live up to his six-year, $30 million contract as one of the best cover corners in the league, the strong secondary that also features Antonio Winfield and Darren Sharper should compensate for a weak linebacking corps.
Starting cornerback viewed as one of the better cover corners in the league.
Smoot will take on a larger role with the departure of Champ Bailey, lining up alongside another former Pro Bowler in Shawn Springs in 2004. He will at times be guarding the opposing team's top corner, so at a minimum you can expect four interceptions in 2004.
