Headed for free agency

The Cardinals will allow Momah (ankle) to become an unrestricted free agent, Kent Somers of The Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
The Cardinals unsurprisingly didn't want to use a restricted free agent tender, which would've cost around $1.9 million at the lowest level. Momah reportedly is making good progress in his rehab from a broken leg, ramping up his activity to include running in recent weeks. He only has three catches in 14 career games, but Arizona might consider bringing him back at a lower price to compete for a spot at the bottom of the depth chart.

The Cardinals boast a clear 1-2 punch at tight end -- Jermaine Gresham and Troy Niklas -- but a third spot likely exists for those in competition for a reserve role. If Niklas' injury woes arise again, Momah could be poised for a consistent allotment of snaps.
Momah has spent much of the past year rehabbing a torn meniscus, which wiped away his first season with the Cardinals. In a tight-end corps occupied by the likes of Darren Fells, Troy Niklas, and Jermaine Gresham, the odds aren't on Momah's side as he seeks a 53-man roster spot. If Momah falls short, the practice squad will likely be his home, assuming he clears waivers.
Previously a wide receiver, 6-foot-7, 248-pound Momah struggled to maintain the weight required for the position, and the last straw appeared to be his release by the Eagles near the end of last year's preseason. When the Lions came calling, he kicked off the transition to tight end and eventually landed a one-year contract with the Cardinals this offseason. After John Carlson retired in May, Momah grew another step closer to his first NFL action, though the signing of Jermaine Gresham places more urgency on the remaining tight ends. Outside of Darren Fells and 2014 second-round selection Troy Niklas, Momah and 2015 seventh rounder Gerald Christian are the inexperienced subjects in the corps.
Released by the Eagles in August of 2013. A huge, 6-foot-7, 230-pound wideout and former defensive end from Boston College, Momah was getting a look from the Eagles as a jump-ball specialist.
