The move was essentially made in order for San Francisco to sign safety Bubba Ventrone. Seldom used at wide receiver, dropping Osgood is more about special teams depth for the 49ers, as opposed to any major hit to their passing game.

Osgood is a three-time Pro-Bowler for his work on special teams, where he figures to lead the 49ers once again this season. However, with just 45 receptions through 11 seasons, Osgood's fantasy value is severely limited as a receiver.

Osgood will provide depth at the receiver position but will make his 2013 impact as a special teams player, just as he did during his tenure with the Jaguars.

Osgood may catch a few passes here and there, but will contribute mostly on special teams.

Osgood is a standout on special teams, but he has never been a force on offense. He has only caught a total of four passes over the last four years combined. As a result, Osgood demanded a trade this offseason, but the Bolts were unable to unload him. He is currently listed as the number five or even the number six receiver on the depth chart, so you definitely shouldn't expect him to do much this year either.

Osgood is a two-time Pro Bowler as a special teams player, but he has grown dissatisfied with his role on the team and has demanded to be used more on offense or traded. The Chargers have said that they will not comply with either of his demands, so it appears that Osgood will be forced to keep playing special teams if he wants to play at all.

Osgood is an exceptional special teams player that hopes to get more playing time with the offense this season. But at this point, he probably has four other wide receivers ahead of him on the depth chart.

Osgood looks like the number four wide receiver in San Diego, which means he is not in line for very many receptions. He has mainly been a standout special teams player to this point. On the plus side, he has a great deal of experience working with new quarterback Philip Rivers because they have worked together a lot as reserves over the past few years. Perhaps he can use that familiarity to climb up to number three on the depth chart.

Despite his prototypical size, Osgood has not evolved into a very dependable wide receiver to this stage in his career. In 2004 he had a total of three receptions only once, and managed only two touchdowns on the season for the second year in a row. This year he figures to rank as the number four or five receiver on the depth chart. His biggest contributions have come as part of the kickoff coverage unit on special teams.

Osgood played in all 16 games as a rookie in 2003, but he only tallied 13 catches. The Chargers desperately need to find playmakers at the wide receiver position, so he will have plenty of chances to assert himself during the preseason.

He's tall (6-5) and coming off a productive college career, though he still wasn't drafted. Speed is a question. He may catch on as a special teams player or reserve wideout.
