Larry English: Re-Signs With Bucs

English re-signed with the Buccaneers on Tuesday, ESPN.com reports.

ANALYSIS
English, a 2009 first-round pick of the Chargers, was released by the Buccaneers following a preseason that included two sacks. However, in light of just one quarterback takedown in Week 1, Tampa Bay has decided to bring back English to add another pass rusher to their defense.

A productive preseason in 2014 gave way to a less impressive regular season, as English recorded a single sack last year. As Tampa looks to reconstruct its defensive line once again, however, English could play a more significant role in 2015. He will compete for a starting spot.

English played in nine games and recorded 18 tackles and 2.5 sacks in 2013 before a biceps injury ended his season.

English was fairly productive in 2012, playing in parts of 14 games, and the Chargers hope he will continue to develop in 2013, although he is not expected to open the season as a starter.

English is trying to work his way back from a foot injury that has caused him to miss a total of 19 games the past two seasons, including 11 last year when he was placed on injured reserve in October. Early reports are that he is healthy and happy heading into 2012, so the Chargers are hoping he can help with the pass rush from the outside linebacker spot.

English played in only eight games in 2010 after sustaining a foot injury, but he was able to contribute three sacks. If he is healthy in 2011, he figures to be in the mix at the outside linebacker spot opposite Shaun Phillips, but the Chargers also signed Travis Laboy at that position during the offseason.

English had a pretty productive rookie season in 2009 as he played in all 16 games and registered 36 tackles and two sacks. He is slated to serve as the primary backup to Shawne Merriman at outside linebacker this year.

English had 31.5 sacks in 50 games during a stellar collegiate career, and San Diego selected him to boost their sagging pass rush. It is not clear whether the team will use him at defensive end, at outside linebacker, or some combination of the two, but if he can put as much pressure on opposing quarterbacks as he did in college, the Chargers will surely find a way to get him some playing time.
