Shuler (illness) was waived by the Jaguars on Saturday, John Oehser of the team's official site reports.

ANALYSIS
Ace Sanders was activated to take Shuler's spot on the 53-man roster. Shuler was set to miss a second straight week with an unspecified illness, and while he could be welcomed back in the weeks ahead, he hasn't even caught a pass since 2010.

Shuler will contend with Jacob Tamme, Tony Moeaki and Levine Toilolo for the right to start at tight end this season. Tamme is pegged as the favorite to win the job, and Moeaki is currently second on the depth chart, so it seems unlikely that Shuler will see significant playing time this season.

Shuler will compete for a roster spot with the Cardinals in training camp.

A blocking tight end who has little upside with the Vikings already having two receiving tight ends in John Carlson and Kyle Rudolph.

The Dolphins are clearly not happy with starting tight end Anthony Fasano but it's unlikely that Shuler can show enough in camp to overtake him.

The 214th overall choice in April's draft gives the Vikings a pass-catching tight end to groom, either on their active roster or the team's practice squad.
