Tanner never did much in Dallas to persuade them to extend his contract after taking a total of 56 carries for only 149 yards over three seasons.
Tanner managed just 61 yards on 25 carries in 2012, and will compete for the third spot on the Cowboys' depth chart behind DeMarco Murray and fifth round pick Joseph Randle.
Undrafted rookie free agent in 2011 shined in training camp, looking like a more-than-serviceable one-cut power runner, and eventually took over the Cowboys' #3 RB spot. If DeMarco Murray and Felix Jones remain injury-prone Tanner is positioned to benefit, but as long as at least one of them is healthy his best shot at fantasy value might be as a short-yardage back.
Undrafted rookie free agent will have to make an impact on special teams to stick on the roster, but could be a practice squad candidate.
