Gregory announced his retirement Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Gregory just signed with the Chiefs on July 31 and didn't give a reason for his retirement, but he's evidently calling it a day. The Chiefs have very little safety experience aside from Eric Berry and Husain Abdullah.

Reserve safety for the Chiefs.
Gregory slots in as Devin McCourty's top backup at free safety, on the heels of a 2012 campaign that saw him record 37 tackles and three picks in 12 games in his first season with the Patriots.
Gregory is a safety who can also play cornerback and versatility is a trait generally coveted by the Patriots, especially on defense. We'll have to see how the team uses him, but there is some IDP upside to be had here if he lands a key role, such as the team's free safety gig.
Gregory would have been the favorite to start opposite Bob Sanders if San Diego did not bring back Eric Weddle, but now he figures to serve in a reserve role. Gregory started the first four games of 2010 before serving a four-game suspension after testing positive for illegal PEDs. To that point, though, he had 30 tackles (25 solo), an excellent pace for IDP purposes.
Gregory will likely enter training camp as the first string strong safety and will battle rookie Darrell Stuckey for playing time.
Gregory entered the year as a backup player in the secondary, but he played his way into a more prominent role as the season began, eventually being named the top nickel corner.
