It's hard to imagine that a PGA TOUR golfer in the year 2010 can win an event and still barely break $1 million, but three players earned that distinction last year, including Beckman who won the Mayakoba classic early in the season. The Mayakoba classic is an opposite event, held opposite a WGC event, which means the field is extremely watered-down. And the Mayakoba field makes the John Deere Classic look like the PGA Championship. Outside of his win at the Mayakoba, Beckman accomplished little. He earned only three top-25s aside from the line victory. Don't expect his performance to improve this season. It's no wonder he missed 16 of 25 cuts last season. Of the four core stats categories, Beckman ranked in the top 100 in only driving accuracy.
Beckman has spent years around the 125th spot on the money list. A win in 2008 relieved some pressure, but he's right back where he started, fighting for his card again. He's 50/50 on retaining his card, which means he should be nowhere near a roster.
After years of struggling on the PGA Tour, Beckman was reduced to Q-School last year. He finished fourth there and regained his status for 2007. He didn't do much with his status however. He did just enough to retain his card for 2008, but the manner in which he did it, leaves a lot to be desired. He earned his first chunk of change at the Mayakoba Classic. His two other strong outings came during the fall. Beckman's days of producing during the regular season may be over.
If his back can hold up for the entire season, Beckman could be in store for a big bounce back season. This is one guy that you should definitely keep your eye on. Will he win a tournament? Probably not.
