Mayfair hasn't been the same since his cancer scare a few years ago, and whether his declining skills are a product of his recovery or his age, the fact remains there isn't much left in his tank. Most of Mayfair's earnings came during the fall last season, something he'll need to get used to. One thing you have to like about Mayfair, though, is the number of events he plays. He played in 29 events last season, and you never know when lighting can strike.
The fall from being a solid PGA Tour professional has come to a screeching halt for Mayfair. Mayfair will use an exemption to retain his playing privledges in 2010, but I would not expect a turn around immediately. Keep an eye on the possible free agent to see if he starts the year well.
Mayfair has had some great seasons over the last 10 years, but it looks like he may be peaking right around the $2 million mark. While his potential to get on a hot streak is right up there with the best, those streaks are becoming less frequent.
Billy Mayfair spent the first half of the 2007 season recovering from a bout of cancer that he beat the prior year. He spent the second half of season playing some pretty good golf. Mayfair is one of the more consistent players on the tour. His upside may not be that high, but he's pretty reliable. Mayfair will improve on his numbers from last year.
Mayfair had a great comeback season in 2005. In 2006 he was well on his way to building on that success when he was stopped in his tracks by cancer. Mayfair was diagnosed with cancer in July. Anything after that point should not be factored into his prospects for 2007. That said, in salary cap leagues he's got a reasonable price, but he's not a steal. In all other leagues, Mayfair is going to be pretty solid throughout, with really good performances sprinkled in.
Mayfair was definitely the comeback story of the year. Not coming back from injury, but coming back from obscurity. Mayfair had gone three years without cracking the million dollar mark, then he goes and cracks $2 million in 2005. Obviously, recommending Mayfair for 2006 is a little risky. Look at him in draft leagues, but stay away in salary cap leagues. The price tag it too high. There's little upside if your spending $2.2 million on him.
