Replaces Rai in 3M Open field
July 16, 2022
Every will replace Aaron Rai in the field at the 3M Open, Rob Bolton of PGATour.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Every will join the 3M Open field as an alternate with Rai electing not to play. Every was originally pushed to the first alternate spot with Cam Davis joining the field as a late entry, but it looks like he'll get to tee it up in Minnesota after all.

Things didn't get any better in the 2019-20 season for Every as he made the cut in only six-of-19 events and didn't perform well in any of the strokes-gained categories. A two-time winner on Tour, it's hard to see Every finding the winner's circle again and his inconsistent play makes him an unreliable DFS option. He can make birdies in bunches when he's on, though.
There are few guys on the PGA Tour that are harder to predict than Every. He picked-up victories in 2014 and 2015 and then failed to crack $400k in earnings in each of the following three seasons. Just when we thought he might be done, he goes out and earns over $1.4 million in just 15 starts this past season. With a realistic upside of around $2.0 million and a very inconsistent track record, Every is not a good salary cap target this season. He may be worth a flyer in draft leagues though as he's proven he can win on the PGA Tour.
Every finished 168th in the points race, but is exempt thanks to his back-to-back wins in the Arnold Palmer Invitational, a tournament that carries a very valuable three-year exemption. But Every, 33, has had two horrid years in a row, although if you want to say he improved from 2015-16, when he was 200th in points, we won't argue. Every played 30 events last season, which certainly has value. It's the part about missing 20 cuts with only two top-25s and zero top-10s that kind of hurts that value. His API exemption runs out after 2017-18.
Every kept his card thanks to winning at Bay Hill two of the past three years, but he offered little in 2015-16 to indicate he would be competitive this coming season. Best to steer clear until he shows a little game.
Every is firmly entrenched as one of the better players on the PGA Tour and he seems to be getting better each year. He's finished in the top-70 on the Fed Ex list in each of the past three seasons, but 2014 was his best to date. It's difficult to see where his ceiling is though, it's possible that his ceiling is right around where he finished last year, which makes it tough to take him in a salary cap league this year. In draft leagues he should go somewhere in the 4th round.
Every started the 2013 slowly, missing the cut in six of his first 13 events, but a top-5 at the Crown Plaza Invitational in May kick-started his season. Every closed the season on a high-note grabbing consecutive top-10s at the Wyndham Championship and the Barclays in August. It looks as though he carried some of that momentum over to the abbreviated season also as he scored a top-10 at the McGladrey Classic in November. Every just turned 30 in December, so he should be in or nearing his peak. With that in mind, he's worth a look in salary cap leagues and he should go in the 60-70 range in drafts.
Matt Every's second go-round on the PGA TOUR was much better than his first try. Some golfers need an adjustment period, and Every looks like he's finally comfortable on the PGA TOUR. Most promising for Every is that he played well at full-field events, including the Valero Texas Open where he finished runner-up and the Memorial where he finished T6. Every should continue to improve his season, but not enough to justify a selection in salary cap leagues. In draft leagues, Every should go in the fifth round.
