2025 Fantasy Outlook
It was a good year by any measure with win wins at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and the Wells Fargo Championship in back-to-back starts, but it could have been a great year by McIlroy standards had a couple short putts gone in down the stretch at the U.S. Open. It's still a bit unfathomable that a player as great as McIlroy has not won a major since 2014, but here we are heading into 2025. The Northern Irishman was third in SG: Total in 2024 (+1.41), but significantly behind both Scottie Scheffler (+2.50) and Xander Schauffele (+1.94). You know he's going to be motivated to close that gap and prove why he still deserves to be the top player on the PGA Tour. To do that he will need to improve his iron play in which he ranked 55th in SG: Approach and 131st in GIR percentage, down from 8th and 79th in 2023, respectively. Read Past Outlooks
Disappointing finish to season
McIlroy had to settle for a share of 23rd place at the TOUR Championship after shooting rounds of 66-67-71-70 at East Lake.
ANALYSIS
McIlroy was looking to win his fourth FedExCup title this week. He put himself in decent position to make a run on the weekend, but the final two rounds were simply not was he was looking for. McIlroy led the field in SG: Off-the-Tee at East Lake, but was 28th out of 30 players in SG: Putting. While it wasn't the finish to the FedExCup season he was hoping for, 2025 was very kind to the 36-year-old who won three times, including at THE PLAYERS and The Masters, where he finally completed the Career Grand Slam. McIlroy is going to stay busy this fall as he looks to win his fourth consecutive Race to Dubai title, and tie Colin Montgomerie for the most DP World Tour Order of Merit titles with seven. McIlroy also will be leading the way for Team Europe at the Ryder Cup next month at Bethpage.

After his initial victory at the CJ Cup in South Carolina to kick off the 2022-23 season, McIlroy faced early challenges in 2023 on the PGA Tour, with five finishes outside the top-25 over seven starts. However, the Northern Irishman hit his stride in the summer, securing 10 consecutive top-10 finishes to end the season, including a win at the Scottish Open. Statistically, McIlroy's performance was strong across all aspects of his game last season. The key for him is maintaining mental focus for four rounds, especially at majors, where he hasn't triumphed since 2014. Despite this, McIlroy's potential remains high, making him a top pick, though he tends to play fewer events than some other leading contenders. Given his caliber, a five-win 2024 season for the future Hall-of-Famer wouldn't be surprising at all.
