Atwal's career was temporarily saved when he won the Wyndham Championship as a Monday-qualifier in 2010. He parlayed that win into a Top-15 at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, but he didn't do much after that appearance and appears to be heading the wrong way again. Atwal ended up as a Monday-qualifier two years ago for a reason, his game was slipping. Although he stopped the bleeding for a couple years, it seems inevitable that he'll fall back into his old form again.
Atwal started the 2010 on a major medical extension in which he had eight events to earn nearly $600K to retain his playing privileges for the 2010 season. He failed to reach that goal, but later in the season turned a Monday qualifier into an unlikely victory at the Wyndham Championship. Atwal can now relax and just golf with the victory securing his card for this season. Injuries have long been a thorn in the side of Atwal, but he remained healthy the final eight months of the season last year, so there's a chance we could see his true potential this year. Last season Atwal was fairly strong in three of the four core categories. The only area in which he struggled was driving accuracy.
After losing his tour card in his first season on the PGA Tour in 2004, Atwal played well enough in 2005 on steady sponsor exemptions to earn his tour card for 2006 and climb within the top 100 in PGA Tour earnings. He's had international success while playing in India, so his thrid full year in the states could finally see him grow into a top golfer.
Atwal has been an international star the past few years, and was the first golfer from India to appear in a PGA event. He's playing on the PGA Tour fulltime this season and could be a rookie surprise.
