Durant had a strong start to the Web.com season last year that included two top-5s in first four starts. But his season headed south thereafter as he missed the cut 10 times in his final 16 starts.
Durant's glory days are long gone. His game has faded the last four years, and considering his age, it's doubtful a resurgence is on the horizon. Durant's best finish last year was a runner-up finish at the Mayakoba Classic. He might be in the twilight of his career, but has a lot of value in statistical leagues. Durant finished in the top 10 in both driving accuracy and GIR for the past five years.
For those fantasy golfers who check out in late August, seeing Durant's name in the top 15 on the money list must be quite a shock. Durant has been a non-factor on the PGA Tour for the last five years, but late in 2006 he found his game again. Durant is probably best known for a hot streak in 2001 when he captured back-to-back wins early in the season. From then on it was clear that Durant could hang with the best when his game was on. Well, his game had been off for about five years until last fall. While his streak in 2006 didn't match the one from 2001, it was still impressive. Four consecutive events in the top six that propelled him into the top 30 on the money list and a spot in the Tour Championship where he captured third place. As for the upcoming year, it's not likely that this current hot streak will carry over into 2007. You can't simply look at a two-month span in the fall and assume that he's again found his game. Unless he hits another streak, his numbers will drop in 2007.
You might remember the Joe Durant who won back-to-back starts in 2001. This isn't that Joe Durant. He showed some signs of the old Joe Durant last year, but he's hasn't come close to being that guy for the last four years. If you think the price tag of little more than $1 million looks good, you should know the chances of seeing the 2001 Durant are pretty slim. Therefore, he's not a good selection for this year.
