Things have not come any easier for Beem since winning the PGA Championship. If anything, the five-year exemption had a negative impact on his game. Sure, the exemption allowed him to remain on the PGA TOUR, but now that he's fighting for his card on a yearly basis, he's consistently in the top-125. Consistently near the bottom of the top-125, but consistent nonetheless. To paraphrase Denny Green, "He is, who we thought he was." Major winner or not, Beem is between the 100th- and 125th-best player on the PGA TOUR.
Rich Beem and Shaun Micheel will always be linked together as two players who won the PGA Championship, and went onto do nothing afterward. Maybe that's a little harsh, each player has had their moments, but if you had asked them after their big wins where they would be in five years, I doubt they would have said, "struggling to keep my card". We've all seen how high Beem's upside is, the problem is, we haven't seen it for a while.
It was another lost year for Beem in 2004, as he made just 13 of 25 cuts and didn't finish in the top 25 in any event. Memories of that great Tiger stare-down at the 2002 PGA keep geting hazier and hazier. Beem might be a fun guy to hang out with, but he hasn't been fun to own for fantasy players the last two seasons.
2003 did not live up to expectations after Beem's PGA Championship victory from 2002. While we don't think Beem is the typical one week wonder, we also don't expect him to go to the elite level either. We should see some improvement in 2004, vs. his disappointing 2003 season of $1,013,950.
