Heading into coaching
Staal will join OHA Edmonton as a member of the coaching staff -- bringing an end to his playing career.
ANALYSIS
Staal last laced up his skates during the 2016-17 campaign when he was playing for the Edinburgh Capitals of the EIHL. Selected by the Coyotes in the second round of the 2008 NHL Draft, the 27-year-old never suited up for Arizona, but did log a pair of NHL contests for the Hurricanes alongside brothers Eric and Jordan.

Jared Staal, who signed a one-year, two-way contract with Carolina in July, is the latest of the Staal clan to join the Hurricanes' roster, joining older brothers Eric and Jordan. Jared Staal made two appearances in a Carolina jersey last season, but he still appears to be a long way away from AHL viability, let alone the NHL. He had just seven points in 52 AHL games last year. He is likely to open the season in the minors with the Charlotte Checkers.
