Due to chronic back problems, Nieuwendyk was forced to announce his retirement Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
The Panthers forward won three Stanley cup titles, and helped Canada win an Olympic Gold medal in 2002. Nieuwendyk was hampered by back issues all season long, missing 14 of the Panthers' first 29 games. The 20-year veteran finished his career with 564 goals and 562 assists in 1,257 games. The retirement decision came to fruition when doctors said that Nieuwendyk's back would not improve.
