Malik is pretty steady as he goes, he'll get you good plus/minus on even strength, and an occassional point on the score sheet. However, he won't win any iron man contests; Malik gets injured quite frequently. If you can stomach that, you should add him to your draft plans.
Malik appeared in 74 games with the Rangers, registering two goals and 16 assists for 18 points, along with 78 penalty minutes; he ranks second on the team with 121 blocked shots and will scored a nifty, trick shootout goal that sealed the win for the Rangers back in November of last season. While Malik will probably not make it on many Fantasy rosters, he’s absolutely invaluable to the Rangers in anchoring that Defensive group. Expect Malik to continue in his stay-at-home style and see occasional time on the power-play.
Somewhat of an enigma throughout his career, Malik gets a fresh start with the Rangers this year if he makes the squad. The knock on Malik has always been his inconsistent play on the ice, and not being able to better utilize his size (6-5, 235 lbs), but he has the potential to be a very solid contributor on the ice. He is compared to Derian Hatcher, but needs to regularly deliver the big hits and be mindful of his defensive assignments before those comparisons can even be considered.
