Ryan did not make a single appearance in the NHL following a concussion that he sustained in training camp last season. He'll be lucky to find a role with Charlotte (AHL) in 2010-11.
It had appeared that Ryan would have a legitimate shot at fourth-line duty, particularly when the ‘Canes committed to him with a two-way contract in July 2009. However, the team eventually brought in veteran Stephane Yelle, likely making Ryan nothing more than a depth option at this point in time.
Ryan led AHL Rochester with 28 goals in only 50 games last season, but he's one of several prospects fighting for a full-time NHL role in 2007-08. Ryan will probably ride the Buffalo/Rochester express this season.
Ryan is still tooling around in the minors and is starting to look like he might have some trouble ever making it to the NHL.
Ryan was acquired from the Stars in the Stu Barnes trade back in March of 2003. Ryan was a star at Northeastern, but still needs some development time in Buffalo's minor league system. He needs to make a move soon.
