Winchester announced his retirement from professional hockey Thursday on his personal Twitter account.

Winchester, 34, appeared in 390 games at the NHL level, but had bounced around various minor-league affiliates the last three seasons. In seven NHL seasons with the Oilers, Stars, Blues, Ducks and Sharks, the journeyman winger compiled 37 goals and 552 PIM while working primarily in bottom-six roles.

Winchester was third on the Blues in hits (143) and penalty minutes (108) last season and gives the team's checking line its physicality. He played primarily on the third line, but could drop to the fourth line if coach Davis Payne wants some offensive touch from his third-line right-winger. Winchester will battle Matt D'Agostini and Vladimir Sobotka for ice time.

Winchester is vying for a spot on the fourth line, with Derek Armstrong and B.J. Crombeen his biggest competition for a nightly spot on the active roster.

Winchester is expected to compete for a fourth line spot along with Krys Barch, Steve Ott and Todd Fedoruk. He won't contribute in any sort of meaningful roto value.

Winchester has shown potential of being a decent power forward in the AHL, but needs to really improve his game if he is to make the club out of camp this year.
