The Sabres assigned Lehtonen to AHL Rochester and view him as insurance in case Buffalo needs an injury replacement, The Buffalo News reports.

Lehtonen is a marginal prospect at age 28. He spent the previous six years playing professionally in Finland and split this season between Nashville and AHL Milwaukee. Lehtonen didn't do much in 15 NHL games and recorded 12 points and a minus-1 rating in 35 AHL games. He's mainly around for organizational depth. The Sabres have good depth at defenseman, but want additional insurance before the postseason.
