The 26-year-old Williams has bounced-around the NHL and AHL over the course of his short career and will likely open the season with the Connecticut Whale of the AHL. Williams has scored nine goals in 31 career games in the NHL, but he's not likely to see much action with the Blueshirts this year.
Williams, a 26-year-old right wing, was a seventh round selection of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. He played pretty solid during the preseason, impressing the coaching staff. There’s a slight chance he makes the final roster for opening night. He has very little NHL experience, recording his best season in 2008-09, when he scored five goals and had seven points in 11 games. It’s difficult to see him making any kind of major impact this season.
Williams may be an intriguing depth guy in Detroit if things fall the right way, but he won't get a chance with the scoring lines, likely limiting his value to being a viable veteran option for point at Grand Rapids (AHL) this season.
Williams has a sniper's touch but he hasn't been able to showcase that much at the NHL level. His 33 points in 49 AHL games last season aren't much to look at, either. He has a shot to make the Leafs this season but he really needs to play on a scoring line. And we don't think that's going to happen, not even with a lineup as thin as the Leafs will ice.
Williams is a sweet sniper who missed a big chunk of last season with a knee injury. He's still learning the game and will be slow to come, but could eventually be a 20-goal man some day. He's a favorite of former-Leaf Doug Gilmour who has raved about his talents. Time will tell.
