Hjalmarsson cleared waivers and was released by the Blue Jackets on Tuesday, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reports.
ANALYSIS
Hjalmarsson signed with the Blue Jackets this offseason in hopes of securing an NHL job, but he did not make the cut, and has decided to return to Europe rather than remain with the Blue Jackets' AHL affiliate in Springfield.

The 25-year-old Swedish League veteran signed with Columbus after racking up 57 points and 87 PIM in 55 games for Linkopings HC. He will get a chance to win a spot on the NHL roster in camp, but it's likely that he will begin his begin his Blue Jackets career in the AHL. His play there, along with injuries on the big club will determine how long he stays there.
Signed a two-way contract with the Blue Jackets in June of 2014.
Hjalmarsson, 21, will skate with Luleå HF of the Swedish Elite League (Elitserien) in 2010-11. He had 20 points (11g, 9a) in 53 games with Rogle Angelholm in the same league last year. Once he enters North American soil, we'll start to project his chances of landing with St. Louis.
Hjalmarsson will spend the 2008-09 in Sweden with hopes of making the Blues team in the near future.
Hjalmarsson was among the very best players in the Swedish U20 league last season, scoring 54 points in 41 games alongside fellow Blues prospect Lars Eller. He's at least a season or two away from the NHL. Someone to keep an eye on in keeper leauges, though.
