Kundratek looked to have the inside track on full-time NHL duty with the Capitals last summer, but injuries derailed the former third-round pick’s efforts to become an NHL regular. With plenty of veteran talent already in DC, to say nothing of competition in Hershey of the AHL, Kundratek will need to impress the new coaching staff to get a sniff of the NHL as a call-up this season.
Kundratek saw time with Hershey (AHL) and Washington last year, playing 25 games in the NHL. He had one goal and six assists during that span. Kundratek signed a two-year contract in the offseason and will have a shot to start the season in Washington this year. He had 31 points in 49 games with Hershey last season, to go along with 16 goals. He may prove to be a decent late round upside gamble this season but it will greatly depend on his expectant playing time. Monitor him closely this summer before risking a draft pick on him.
Kundratek was an assist machine for the Medicine Hat Tigers of the WHL last season. His 33 helpers helped him rank 30th in the entire junior league in the scoring department, which is particularly impressive for a defenseman. Next up for Kundratek is playing time for the Hartford Wolf Pack, a minor-league affiliate of the Rangers.
Kundratek will be with the Rangers in camp this fall, but it's likely just so the team can get an up close look at him. He may not even go to Hartford this year as he's just 19 years old He's a big talent though, and could be a surprise candidate to stay with the parent club.
The 18-year-old blueliner will play for the Medicine Hat Tigers of the WHL this season. He's a couple of years away from competing for time with the Blue Shirts.
