McCarthy acted as a human boomerang last season, often moving from Worcester of the AHL to the parent club in San Jose. He is known for having a good attitude and work ethic, but is merely a depth option for a club that has much bigger names at the forward position.
McCarthy has spent the last four seasons with Boston University, and his breakout year occurred in 2008-09 when he posted 29 points (6G, 23A) in 45 games. There is a long list of talented young forwards hoping to get their shot with the Sharks, but what sets McCarthy apart is his maturity and leadership sense. Still, he’s not NHL ready.
