Phoenix has traded Cheverie to Pittsburgh, reports NHL.com. Cheverie, Harrison Ruopp and a draft pick went to the Penguins in exchange for Zybnek Michalek.
ANALYSIS
He split last season between Gwinnett (ECHL) and Portland (AHL). He struggled at the AHL level but did record a 10-4-8 record with Gwinnett, including a 2.71 GAA and .910 save percentage. Right now, he's a depth minor leaguer whose primary claim to fame is his hometown -- Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia -- same as Sid the Kid.

Cheverie was a throw-in in the Zbynek Michalek salary dump over the summer. The Penguins website doesn't even mention any of Cheverie's statistics from his previous season in its media release about the goalie. He spent the majority of 2011-12 in the ECHL but made appearances for the AHL Portland Pirates; Cheverie went 4-3 in those nine contests, compiling a 3.29 GAA and .893 save percentage. The Penguins needed organizational depth at the goaltending position and acquired it in Cheverie. It's unlikely he plays in the NHL in 2012-13.
