CTampa Bay Lightning  Minors
September 8, 2015
Martindale signed a professional tryout contract with the Lightning on Tuesday, Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Martindale split time with two AHL clubs in 2014-15, generating 16 goals and 11 assists across 64 games. The Bolts boast one of the deepest forward corps in hockey, so it's unlikely that Martindale is able to escape training camp with a spot on the 23-man roster in hand. Expect him to open the 2015-16 campaign at the AHL level.

Martindale's reputation is of someone with plenty of skill, but little commitment to do what it takes to play in the NHL. That certainly seemed to be the case last season as he only had six goals in 34 games in the ECHL and failed to light the lamp in 16 games for Oklahoma City of the AHL. He's going to have to show more if he wants to play in Edmonton.
Martindale had 34 goals and 83 points for the Ottawa 67s of the OHL last season so the scoring ability is there, but still, he will only be 20 years of age in October and is at least another season or two from having a legitimate shot at making the Oilers. Martindale is not considered one of the top prospects in the organization.
At 19 years of age, Martindale has played three seasons for the Ottawa 67s of the OHL and scored 51 goals. Martindale possesses some upside but natural progression would lead you to believe he will have to prove himself in the AHL before getting a shot with Edmonton.
