Hull, who formally announced his retirement from the NHL at a media conference Saturday night, said he made the difficult decision to retire because he simply felt he was no longer able to live up to his own expectations, reports the
Canadian Press.

"I wish no one had to do this because it's so hard, it's hard because you never think you're going to grow older and be unable to live up to the expectations you set for yourself," Hull said. "I just thank everyone who ever touched my life in the game." At that point, the 741-goal scorer had to stop to gain control of his emotions. He had one assist in five games with the Coyotes and retired wearing his father's No. 9 jersey which the elder Hull had "un-retired" so his son could wear it this season. Brett finishes his career with 741 goals and 650 assists, two Stanley Cup wins, nine All-Star jerseys, one Hart trophy and one Conn Smythe.
