Holmstrom was waived by the Islanders on Friday, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Holmstrom hasn't drawn into an NHL game since the 2011-12 season, and was never expected to contend for a spot on the Islanders' Opening Night roster, so this development is hardly surprising. As long as he isn't nabbed off waivers by another NHL club, the 29-year-old forward will head to AHL Bridgeport this weekend, where he'll likely spend the entirety of the 2016-17 season.

The captain of the Flyers' AHL affiliate Adirondack, Holmstrom tore his ACL in December and missed the remainder of the season. Assuming he's fully recovered, Holmstrom will likely play the majority of the season in the AHL, but may see the occasional call up. Even with that, he'll be a limited points-threat on the fourth line.
Solid production with Adirondack in the AHL, 79 points the last two years combined, has earned Holmstrom two call-ups over the last two seasons resulting in seven games total with the Flyers. While Holmstrom won’t be a regular with the Flyers look to him fill in during extended injuries.
Holmstrom appeared in a pair of games for the Flyers last season, spending most of his time in the AHL, where he had 38 points and 75 PIMs in 76 games. He'll have a shot to make the Flyers out of camp, but is fantasy prospects are limited at best.
