Bartley was essentially the Preds’ seventh defenseman for most of last season, serving as a healthy scratch for long stretches of action. He played in only 37 games and notched 10 assists, although he did play in four of the Preds’ six opening-round playoff games against the Blackhawks. Looking ahead, Bartley is likely to once again be the odd man out this season, as the offseason acquisition of free agent Barret Jackman will likely prevent Bartley from securing himself an everyday spot in the lineup. For fantasy purposes, he should only be used as an occasional spot start in ultra-deep leagues.
Bartley played in just 50 games for the Preds last season and went through long stretches where he was a healthy scratch in favor of Mattias Ekholm. This season, he once again projects as the Preds’ seventh defenseman and may only be used in the case of an injury or when one of the team’s regular blueliners needs a night off. Fantasy owners will want to avoid Bartley in all but the deepest of leagues.
Bartley was a late-season call-up for the Preds last year and filled in quite nicely over the last 24 games of the season, averaging almost 20 minutes per night in a top-four role and adding seven assists along the way. He will likely be back in a similar role this season and given he was the AHL Milwaukee Admirals' top-scoring defenseman at the time of his call-up last year (26 points in 54 games), he definitely has the tools to contribute offensively for the Preds this season. He could be a dark-horse selection candidate in the later rounds of your fantasy draft, so keep an eye on him.
