Aittokallio didn't report to Avalanche training camp Thursday and has decided to play in his native Finland this season, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The Avalanche will still retain Aittokallio's rights if and when he decides to return to North America, but the 23-year-old goalie doesn't seem to figure into the organization's plans at either the NHL or AHL level. Semyon Varlamov and Reto Berra are on tap to serve as the top two goalies for the Avalanche, while Calvin Pickard and Spencer Martin are first in line to form the goalie tandem at AHL San Antonio this season.

Aittokallio's short-term NHL dream took a big blow this offseason when the Avs inked Reto Berra to a three-year gig to back up Semyon Varlamov. The Finn will now spend a third-straight season in the AHL to continue to build more consistency into his game. He still has the talent to be an NHL starter some day, but there's no need to even think about him in fantasy. Not yet, at least.
