Witkowski was waived by the Blues on Saturday, Jim Thomas of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
ANALYSIS
This transaction is the Blues' attempt to get Witkowski to AHL Springfield before the start of the season. The 32-year-old is likely just a depth defenseman for the Blues' organization this year and shouldn't be expected to see much NHL time.

You can forget about Witkowski providing fantasy utility as he's a role player mainly deployed against physical opponents. The Michigan native has averaged a mere 9:39 of ice time between the Lightning and Red Wings in an NHL career turning five years old, but versatility is his saving grace as he's capable of manning the blue line or acting the part of a fourth-line flanker. Witkowski, who's produced 126 PIM over 85 career games, will be playing for a new contract in the 2018-19 season.
Witkowski penned a two-year, $750,000 contract with the Red Wings on July 1. According to offseason reports, the signing was expedited by head coach Jeff Blashill, who had originally taken Witkowski and Danny DeKeyser under his wings with Western Michigan University. Witkowski is thus a natural choice to pair up with DeKeyser on the blue line, but he’s also capable of handling a bottom-six forward role if necessary. Either way, fantasy owners won't be clamoring for the former Lightning blueliner, who has registered just four assists in 54 career contests.
