Fails medical
Horton (back) failed his physical for the Leafs on Thursday, as expected, Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Horton's deal -- $5.3 million annually through 2019-20 -- can now be designated for long-term injured reserve, which will provide the Leafs with much-needed cap relief. This figures to be an annual process for the 32-year-old until his contract runs out, at which point he will officially retire.

Horton barely got a chance to show what he could do in his first season in Columbus, as just as he seemed to fully recover from offseason shoulder surgery, an abdominal injury took him down. His final tally (19 points in 36 games) was hardly worth his big free agent contract, but a now-healthy Horton will head into 2014-2015 with a lot to prove. He showed some chemistry with Ryan Johansen, and if Horton can keep that line placement, he should be able to return to the 20-goal, 50-point level.

Nathan Horton: (Back) Showing Progress
Horton (back) was in Columbus on Thursday to speak to the front office and hasn't yet given up on the possibility of playing again, the Columbus Dispatch reports. "There’s been some progress there. He is feeling a little better," president of hockey operations John Davidson said. "I don’t know what that means in the big picture, but he’s better now than he was earlier this season. His whole attitude was different — better — than the last time we saw him."
