Announces retirement
Hanzal will hang up his skates and call it a career, Arizona Coyotes Insider Craig Morgan reports.
ANALYSIS
Hanzal played in just seven games back in 2018-19 for the Stars due to a back issue and will now officially end his career after spending last year on long-term injured reserve. Over the course of his 12-year career, Hanzel appeared in 673 games, the bulk of which were with the Coyotes, in which he garnered 127 goals and 211 helpers.

The veteran center's first year in Dallas was mostly a bust, as he produced only 10 points in 38 games while trying to play through various injuries before he eventually underwent back surgery that ended his season in February. While Hanzal hasn't had any setbacks in his recovery, the original timetable potentially left him sidelined until December, leaving a big hole up the middle on the Stars' depth chart to begin the year. Even when he returns to action, Hanzal can't be counted on to stay in the lineup -- he's played more than 80 games in a season only once, back in 2009-10. The Stars need secondary scoring, though, so when he does suited up again, he'll likely get a long look on the second or third line in the hopes he'll rediscover the form that saw him rack up 41 points in 64 games three seasons ago in Arizona.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Could retire at season's end
Hanzal (back) indicated back in April that he will likely retire following the 2019-20 season, but he has yet to announce an official decision on the matter, freelance hockey writer Craig Morgan reports.
ANALYSIS
Hanzal isn't expected to be available when the campaign resumes, as the 33-year-old is still tending to a major back injury that has limited him to just 45 regular-season appearances with Dallas over the past two years. Though Hanzal is believed to be in good health, he'll be at risk of recurring back problems if he elects to continue his career, a reality that could prompt him to step away from the game. Expect Hanzal to reveal a decision on his playing future within the next few months.
