While his record was below .500 (9-11-1), Bernier provided a steadying presence in goal for a rebuilding Detroit team a year ago. His GAA was below 3.00 (2.99) and his save percentage was .914, his highest mark since the 2016-17 campaign. Bernier hit unrestricted free agency this past summer and was rewarded with a surprisingly lucrative two-year, $8.25 contract with the Devils. The 32-year-old is behind Mackenzie Blackwood in the pecking order for New Jersey but should still see plenty of playing time over the course of the season. Consider Bernier a serviceable late-round fantasy option with some additional value in leagues which promote daily lineup changes as opposed to weekly.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Job not secure
Per general manager Tom Fitzgerald, Bernier, who underwent season-ending hip surgery in January, will have to compete with Blackwood and another unnamed NHL netminder for playing time in 2022-23, NHL.com's Wes Crosby reports.
ANALYSIS
Bernier's health heading into 2022-23 is anything but guaranteed, so he may have been facing an uphill battle for significant playing time even if the Devils weren't planning on bringing in another NHL-caliber goaltender this offseason. Bernier went 4-4-1 while posting a 3.06 GAA and a .902 save percentage through 10 appearances this year.
